Is “Bald” Sexual Harassment?

Blog Cover-2

An interesting story here about lawyers who fight for justice, defend the defenseless, and—apparently—now protect the bald among us from workplace jabs! As a proud member of the chrome-dome club myself, I couldn’t help but chuckle (and flex my newfound legal armor) when I read about a recent High Court ruling in the UK. According to a decision that’s making waves—and headlines—calling a man “bald” can now be classified as sexual harassment. Yes, you heard that right: my shiny scalp just got an upgrade from punchline to protected status – at least in the UK.

The case, as reported by Echo News on November 20, 2024, stems from an electrician named Tony Finn, who endured a workplace spat that ended with his supervisor hurling the phrase “stupid bald c***” his way. Ouch. Finn took his grievance to court, arguing that the comment wasn’t just rude—it was harassment tied to his gender. The High Court agreed, ruling that remarking on a man’s baldness is akin to commenting on a woman’s physical attributes (say, her chest). Why? Because baldness, the judges reasoned, is “inherently related to sex”—it’s a trait far more common in men than women. Suddenly, my lack of locks feels less like a follicular failure and more like a badge of legal honor.

Now, I’ll admit, as a bald guy myself, I’ve heard it all—“cue ball,” “Baldilocks,” you name it. I’ve laughed it off over the years, but this ruling has me rethinking my thick skin (or lack thereof up top). Maybe I should’ve been filing lawsuits instead of buying more hats! In all seriousness, this decision is a fascinating twist in employment law, highlighting how seemingly casual “banter” can cross into harassment territory when it’s tied to a protected characteristic. For employers, it’s a reminder to keep the workplace vibe respectful—and maybe invest in some sensitivity training before the next office roast.

Of course, I can’t help but think of a certain Bible story when I read about this. In 2 Kings 2:23-24, some cheeky youths mocked the prophet Elisha, shouting, “Go up, you baldhead!” Elisha, apparently not one for turning the other cheek, called down a curse, and out popped two bears to maul the offenders. Talk about divine retaliation! I’m not saying I want bears to handle my next heckler, but it’s nice to know the law’s got my back now—without the need for wildlife intervention.

So, what does this mean for you? If you’re an employer, it’s time to rethink those “just joking” comments—especially if they hit below the hairline. If you’re an employee who’s been on the receiving end of bald-based barbs, you might have a case worth exploring. And if you’re like me—proudly bald and loving it—well, we’ve got a little extra swagger knowing the UK High Court’s in our corner.

At MeyerPink Law, we’re here to help navigate these quirky legal waters, whether you’re dealing with harassment, discrimination, or just need advice on keeping your workplace bear-free.
